Frequently Asked Questions: Running Related Injuries

  • It depends! We always try to keep our patients running in some capacity when we can this may mean changing speed, distance, running surface or even cadence. We always suggest a thorough evaluation to ensure you are not dealing with something like a bone stress injury that would require rest - if we can keep you running, WE WILL!

  • YES! Our running assessment is a thorough screen of functional strength for runners looking at core and leg strength, running mechanics as well as using and AI based Inertial Measurement Unit Sensor to measure things like force absorption, time spent on the ground, symmetry and stability. We’re running nerds around here!

  • Research shows that people who run actually have better joint quality thn those who don’t. Most running related injuries are due to training error, such as doing too much to soon or not being able to tolerate the current load (not strength training). We have helped people with all conditions get back to running including those who are “bone-on-bone” or diagnosed with arthritis or meniscus injuries.

  • All of our rehab specialists are doctorate-level clinicians trained to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal injuries. Most running related injuries can be managed conservatively, however If we believe that there is need for an Orthopedic Surgeon we have a network of doctors that we refer to and can usually get patients in the same week.

  • We treat all running related injuries and commonly see: patellar tendinitis “runner’s knee”, patellofemoral pain, IT Band pain, Achilles tendinitis, Plantar fasciitis, hamstring tendinitiis, quadriceps tendinitis, glute med pain, bursitis, arthritis and many other running related pains.

  • Because we work with athletes and active adults we know that 100% prevention of pain is not likely. However you should be able to prevent major injuries that require full rest by managing training volume, recovering and fueling appropriately as well as regularly implementing strength and conditioning to your training.
